Weekly Lojong Study
Thursdays at 1-2pm EST on Zoom
Lojong study, also known as mind training, is a practice that was developed between 900-1200 CE as part of the Mahayana school of Buddhism. This practice, attributed to the Bengali teacher Atisha, involves contemplating 59 slogans and implementing the slogans into both meditation practice, and post-meditation life “off the cushion.” The slogans range from understanding the more esoteric aspects of “ultimate reality,” to extremely pithy and directive ways of navigating human nature. The more you study the Lojong and develop familiarity with them, the more you find the slogans appearing in your life like little helpers. The Lojong is remarkable in the way that it not only touches on the most aggravating aspects of the human mind, but makes use of these seemingly annoying human tendencies to decrease suffering and wake up.
As an optional component to this class, participants are invited to use the slogans as weekly writing prompts, which may take the form of journaling, poetry, or any form of creative writing.
This is a drop in class and weekly attendance is not required, however committing to attendance is suggested to gain a deeper understanding of the practice.
